How to Choose the Best SEO Keywords for your Website

I don’t know about you, but SEO is the LAST thing I want to worry about when I’m trying to build a business, BUT keywords are so important to implement in order to make your website visible. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic to your page from search engines. The details of website SEO can be complicated, but keywords are an easy way to boost your ranking with Google. So, if you’re not already an SEO guru, here are some tips on how to choose the BEST SEO keywords for your website:


Your keywords are going to set you apart from your competitors. So, let’s say you’re a baker. Choosing “baker” as a keyword is a start, but it isn’t going to get you very far with Google. Sit down and make a list. Ask yourself, who are your ideal customers? What are they searching for when they set out to find delicious baked goods? For example, if you specialize in cupcakes, the keyword “cupcake baker” would be a good place to start. It’s okay if your keyword list is super broad at first, the more keywords and phrases you write, the more specific your list will get.

Next, get local. If you’re a baker, or someone who offers a product that can’t be shipped, odds are your customers are going to be local. What area are you based in? Where do your clients live? Now you can add, “Detroit cupcake baker” or “Southeast Michigan cupcake baker” to your list.

Last but not least, think of your FAQs. FAQs from your customers are an amazing source for SEO keywords. Which questions do your customers ask you the most? Let’s stick with our baker example and add, “most popular cupcakes for birthday parties,” or “how many cupcakes to order for your event.” Do you offer delivery? Add, “cupcake delivery options for your southeast Michigan event.”  Once you have a solid list, you can build off of the words and phrases you already have. This list will be the base of your SEO keyword toolkit.


Yes. I know. Finding the perfect list of SEO keywords for your business’s website is starting to get a bit time consuming, BUT I promise it will be worth it! Once you have this list in your back pocket, you’ll be able to save it, use it, or add to it whenever you need to, so hang in there.

When researching your keywords, start with Google. Try typing one of the keywords from your list into Google and see what pops up. This is a great way to see what people are searching for in connection to your particular keyword. Look and see what websites are coming up. Is there a different version of your keyword that would work better? This may also give you more ideas for keywords to add to your website.

BONUS TIP: clear your cache and cookies before using Google for research to make sure that the suggested results aren’t influenced by previous searches.

Aside from using Google, there are a ton of free keyword tools out there that you can use to make sure you’re on the right track. Ubersuggest has a free version of their plug-in that you can add to your browser. To use it, you simply type a keyword into Google and Ubersuggest automatically gives you a list of related keywords on the right side of your browser’s results page. Tools like these could give you a better idea of what potential clients are searching for.

How to Write the Perfect Blog Post

If you’re just starting your small business, or you’re just stepping into the wild world of social media, blogging can be an intimidating task. You know you have to do it, but how do you write an article your customers actually want to read? I have good news, it’s not as hard as you think! Even if writing isn’t your favorite thing to do, you can do this. Here’s some easy-to-follow advice on how to write the perfect blog post:


Obviously, your title is going to be the first thing that people see. It’s what is going to determine whether your potential customer clicks or keeps scrolling. Above all else, your title should address a problem that your reader needs solved. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. What problems do they need solved? For example, if you’re a makeup artist, your customers may desperately want to know how to achieve the perfect smoky eye look (I know I do), so your blog title might go something like, “3 Easy Steps to Achieve the Perfect Smoky Eye.”  Figure out what your customers want, help them get it, and make it catchy!

Bonus: people love numbers. It’s a fact. Adding a number into your title, specifically an odd number, will help ensure more viewers!


Images are almost just as important as titles, especially if you’re on social media. Make sure your image is relevant, high-quality, and on-brand. You can create Pinterest-worthy blog header images in a free program called Canva. Stock images are also helpful. You can find amazingly beautiful and FREE stock images on Unsplash.


This is where you pull your reader in. In your introduction, tell your reader what problem you’ll be addressing, and how they’ll benefit from reading what you have to say. Introductions should be short and sweet. Don’t make them any longer than a paragraph.


When people read blog articles, they want to get to the information they need quickly. Subheadings help to break up your article into easily digestible bites of information. This is especially beneficial to the skimmers who are only there for specific information. Break your article into multiple chunks. If we continue with our makeup artist example, “3 Easy Steps to Achieve the Perfect Smoky Eye,” each step could be a separate subheading with the details in the body below.


Your body text lives below your subheadings. This is the meat of the article and where your reader is going to find the most valuable information. When writing your body text, remember to keep it conversational. Blog articles are meant to be informative but still enjoyable to read. Your readers don’t want to feel like they’re reading a technical instruction manual, so try writing like you would speak. Be relatable and empathetic to your customers’ needs, and keep your sentences short. 


Your conclusion should wrap up all of the main takeaways from your article. At this point, you’ve handed your reader all of the valuable information, so now you’re just wrapping up the conversation. In the end, most blog articles should be between 500 and 1,000 words. That tends to be the magic number when it comes to writing valuable content. 

Call to action

Most importantly, your call to action. What do you want your reader to do? What are you currently offering? Whatever action you want your reader to take, whether that’s signing up for weekly emails or scheduling a consultation, add it at the end of your article. If they make it this far, it’s likely they find value in what you’re saying and want to hear more!

As I mentioned, blogging can be overwhelming at first, but once you catch your rhythm and gain some experience, It’s not so terrible. Practice makes perfect, so don’t give up! Read other articles in your niche for inspiration, or ask around to see what is working for other businesses. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Bonus: Make sure you proofread your articles! Have a friend look it over with a fresh set of eyes. There are also plenty of services out there that will make sure your spelling and grammar are correct. You don’t want to leave a bad impression!

Why Copywriting is the Perfect Career for the Undecided

I’ve had a lot of jobs. Like a lot. I was never one of those lucky people who came out of the womb knowing what they wanted to do in life. I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, and I’m 30.

Since graduating college with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature in 2012, I’ve been a retail worker, a substitute teacher, a data entry specialist, a researcher, a mystery shopper, a swim instructor, a massage therapist, and finally, a copywriter. I always knew that I wanted to write, but in 2012 I just needed a job so that I could survive independently from my parents. Entry level (aka: must have 5 years of experience) writing jobs were hard to come by in Detroit, Michigan.

So, after a long and winding path, here I am. Along the way, I learned that my two core desires in my career life are to help people and have flexibility. I want to be useful and make a measurable difference in another person’s life, but still have time to live my own. I definitely wasn’t doing either of those things in a typical 9-5. To be blunt, I was miserable. Hours of extra work and missed time with my family went virtually unnoticed, and I was working myself into the ground so my employer could get richer.  

Millennials and Gen-Zers see work differently. Yes, we all have to make a living, but we also want to actually live. So, we’re figuring out different ways to work, and how to work for ourselves. With mental health issues on the rise, work-life balance is more important than ever, and what better way to ensure that balance is achieved than being your own boss.

Copywriting allows to me to do something I love, and help people

Not only do I get to do what I love, but I also get to help business owners feel a little less overwhelmed. Writing isn’t for everyone, and running a business is hard enough without worrying about your content. Who has time to come up with SEO friendly blog articles when they’re focused on keeping their business bustling? Although words are a powerful force when it comes to driving business, the task can easily and understandably fall to the bottom of the list. I want to see small businesses thrive, so if I can help in some small way to make that happen, I’m thrilled to do so.

Copywriting allows flexibility

 Doctors appointment in the middle of the day? No problem. I’ll just adjust my schedule accordingly to ensure I check enough tasks off my list. Want to take a Friday off for a long weekend road trip? Why not? My work doesn’t define my life, and I can easily shift my schedule to meet my needs. Even if I want an extra hour or two of sleep in the morning, that’s okay! Maybe I’ll just work a little later, or make up for it another day. To me, this is how work should be. As long as it’s done, and done on time, it doesn’t matter when it happens.

With copywriting, I have a different career with every project

Like I said, I’ve always had a hard time deciding what I wanted to do in life. There are so many options! With copywriting, I get to be a lot of things. This job allows me to learn about different careers and walk around in the shoes of different people. One week, I’m a wedding photographer, the next week I could be a heating and cooling expert. The possibilities are endless. I love to do research and I am a life-long learner. As a copywriter, I get to do both on a weekly if not daily basis.

Copywriting, or just writing in general, isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But, this career checks all of the boxes for me, and maybe it’s the answer for others who are still trying to find their purpose.
